Hearing the voice of God

Session 1:

The voice can only reproduce what the ear can hear – I can’t say anything I can’t hear

The root problem in our world is that our ears have been deafened to the voice of God

If I listen to lies of the enemy will take away my ability to hear God’s voice in my life

He speaks healing, wisdom, truth, grace, joy, peace, and power

Let there be light – his voice is still creating galaxies at the end of the universe

His voice can heal the lame, give the blind sight, give the deaf hearing, and call a dead man from a grave

God’s audible voice is a thin slice of his vocal range

God’s ability to speak is not limited to our ability to hear him audibly

What voices do I need to tune out or turn down?

1 Samuel 3 – Speak Lord, for your servant is listening

1 Kings 19:11-12

God uses the natural things to get Elijah’s attention so he wouldn’t miss the voice of God

The goal of hearing God’s voice isn’t just hearing him – it is producing intimacy with Him

Questions for session 1:

  1. How well do you hear the voice of God?
Why do you think that is?

  2. What kinds of things “deafen” you to the voice of God?

  3. How much power is in God’s voice?
    Creation story

  4. What are some ways you feel God communicates with people?
    What about you personally?

  5. Why does God sometime speak in a whisper?

  6. John 10:1-10: What is the relationship between the sheep and the shepherd?
Why do the sheep follow the shepherd’s voice?

  7. Would you say it’s easy or difficult to know when something is from God or not?

  8. What does the thief in the story in verse 10 do?

  9. How are the other voices in my life trying to steal, kill and destroy?

  10. How does scripture play a role in knowing what God has to say?

  11. How has the voice of Jesus proven trustworthy in your life?

  12. What practices can I put into place to hear God better?

Hearing the voice of God Session 2:

The whispering spots in the US capital building

Whispering spots in scripture:

  • The burning bush
  • Daniel in the upper room of his house
  • Jesus in the wilderness
  • Paul in prison
  • Moses on the mountain

Whispering spots in my life:

  • Geographical locations
  • Everyday places
  • Do I hear different things at different places?

How can I recalibrate my ears to hear what is really being said?

Ps 46:10

Matthew 3:17

Ps 32:7

Isaiah 54:17

Silence is the difference between

  1. Sight and insight
  2. Happiness and joy
  3. Fear and faith

Session 3: The key of keys – the Bible

Scripture is our anchor

Tolerance has become more important than truth – truth is the anchor

The Bible is living – active – powerful

It reads us as we read it

The Holy Spirit is on both sides of it – He inspired people who wrote it, and He enlightens us as we read it

2 Timothy 3:16-17

Hebrews 4:12

How to get into it:

  • Reading plans
  • Consistency
  • Notes, underlining, highlighting
  • I Corinthians 8:1
  • 2 Timothy 2:15

Hermeneutical principles: Context, type of writing being done, etc

Dependence on the Holy Spirit to reveal to us what is going on

Read until we have a “cause to pause” – confusion, convicting, prompting to pray

The Bible redefines possibility

Philippians 4:13

1 Corinthians 2:9

John 1:12

Is the Bible just a picture to me or is it alive and life changing?

John 15:7

Hearing without doing isn’t helpful

Tell me about a time when scripture was powerful in your life.

4 questions to ask as you study scripture:

  1. What’s happening in the passage?
  2. What about this passage was significant to the original audience?
  3. What does this passage teach us about the character of God and humans?
  4. How can we apply the timeless principles from this passage to our lives this week?

Ruth 1

1-5, 6-10, 11-18, 19-22

How did you feel about reading the whole first chapter?

Who is the story about?

How are the characters related to each other?

What time period is the story set in?

What natural disaster happened in the beginning?

What was their response to it?

What happened to all the men?

Where are Ruth and Orpah from?

Where was everyone else from?

What does God do in vs 6?

What does Naomi do after hearing what God had done?

Who left Naomi? Who stayed with her?

What did Naomi name herself after returning to Bethlehem?

What time of year did Naomi and Ruth return to Bethlehem?

What is different from us to the people of ancient Israel?

If we cross reference vs 1 with Judges 2:16-19 we see what’s going on in Israel.

If we search for Moab/Moabite in scripture we get Deuteronomy 23:3-6. What do those verses tell us about Israel and Moabite’s relationship?

What would the Israelites have thought about Naomi’s sons for marrying women from Moab?

How does digging into the history change how you read the text?

What is Naomi’s attitude toward God in the story?

What was God’s action in the story? Vs 6

What does that teach us about God?

What is Ruth’s attitude toward God?

How should my faithfulness toward God influence our actions toward others?

What would it look like if I chose to treat someone in my life like Ruth treated Naomi?

————————————————————————————

Session 4

The 7 languages

What are the most significant words someone has ever said to you?

How does your relationship with that person impact the significance of the words?

August 10, 1874 – Alexander Bell – working on the audio phonograph – 2 years later his assistant heard a voice over a phone line for the first time

God doesn’t always speak to us the same way (through the same means)

What are examples of God talking to people in scripture?

  1. Scripture
  2. Desire – Psalm 37:4
  3. Dreams – Acts 2:17
  4. Doors – Revelation 3:7-8
  5. People –
  6. Prompting –
  7. Pain – C S Lewis quote –

Hebrews 1:1-4

How can I be sure what I heard from “God” is really from Him?

John 16:7-15

We don’t just listen with our ears –

Credibilty – 55% to body language, 38% to tone, 7% to actual words

Different people are smart in different ways

Spirituality filters through many different things

Single Minded – Summer GH Young Adults Series 2021

Single-Minded: Having or concentrating on only one aim or purpose.

1 John 4:7-11

7 Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.

8 The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

9 God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his one and only Son into the world so that we might live through him.

10 Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

11 Dear friends, if God loved us in this way, we also must love one another.

When you think about being single, what comes to mind?

What does the current culture think about singleness?

Why are so many people afraid of being single?

Why are so many people willing to give up all their convictions and core values to make a person they’re in a relationship with happy?

“Choosing to be single isn’t selfish, it’s just smarter to be alone than with the wrong person.”

“Instead of focusing on finding the right guy or girl, spend your energy on becoming the woman or man God has created you to be.”

“There is no shame in being single. It’s not a curse, or punishment. It’s a gift.”

General Statements About Singleness:

  • You are no more or less a person based on your relationship status.
  • God does not look at You differently because you are in a relationship or not
    • He still wants to be first in your life
    • If He isn’t first in your life, then you will never have joy and peace
  • When you consider a relationship – first date, long term, just friends, group of friends, etc – do you think of things that you need to do to make that person (or those people) like you (more)?
    • Comparison trap – go around the room and say things people have done – successes and failures
    • We want the approval of everyone around us so badly that we will give up the approval of the only one that matters

Fan or Follower?

“It may seem that there are many followers of Jesus, but if they were honestly to define the relationship they have with him I am not sure it would be accurate to describe them as followers. It seems to me that there is a more suitable word to describe them. They are not followers of Jesus. They are fans of Jesus.

Here is the most basic definition of fan in the dictionary:

“An enthusiastic admirer”

“And I think Jesus has a lot of fans these days. Fans who cheer for him when things are going well, but who walk away when it’s a difficult season. Fans who sit safely in the stands cheering, but they know nothing of the sacrifice and pain of the field. Fans of Jesus who know all about him, but they don’t know him.

But Jesus was never interested in having fans. When he defines what kind of relationship he wants, “Enthusiastic Admirer” isn’t an option. My concern is that many of our churches in America have gone from being sanctuaries to becoming stadiums. And every week all the fans come to the stadium where they cheer for Jesus but have no interest in truly following him. The biggest threat to the church today is fans who call themselves Christians but aren’t actually interested in following Christ. They want to be close enough to Jesus to get all the benefits, but not so close that it requires anything from them.”

“Many fans mistakenly identify themselves as followers by using cultural comparisons. They look at the commitment level of others around them and feel like their relationship with Jesus is solid. Essentially they grade their relationship with Jesus on the curve, and as long as they are more spiritual than the next guy, they figure everything is fine. That’s why some fans are almost glad when it’s found out that the Christian family everyone admires has a child who rebels or a marriage that is struggling to stay together and isn’t as perfect as it appeared. The curve just got set a little lower.”

Who Am I?

Not what you do, how old you are, or where you’re from.

If I’m going to be honest, I have to take a real assessment of who I am.

Am I a completely committed follower of Jesus?

Do I see myself as enough no matter who else is in my life?

In order for me to move forward in my walk with Him, I have to be satisfied that His love for me provides all the worth I could ever seek.

God’s love for me:

  • Romans 5:8
  • John 15:5 – casual friends (good people, funny, good qualities) vs 12 hour road trip in a car with limited stops friends
  • 1 Peter 5:6-7
  • Psalm 86:15
  • John 14:23
  • 1 John 4:7-11
  • Galatians 2:20
  • Deuteronomy 7:9
  • Matthew 22:37-39

If we can agree that God loves me (and You), then how does His love for me change my perspective on all my other relationships?

Who are they?

When someone comes into my life what is my process of evaluation?

What would the right relationship look like?

What is God’s goal for the relationships in my life?

I Corinthians 13:4-8a

What things should a healthy, godly relationship contain?

  • Encouragement – Ephesians 4:29
  • Acceptance for who you are – and who they are – Ecclesiastes 7:8-9
  • Loyalty –
  • Growth in your relationship with Christ
  • Prayer – individual and with each other – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
  • Serving together and with others –

How can I be content single, but open to a relationship if it came?

WIN THE DAY Young Adult series

Notes for our last Thursday Night Bible Study series – Win the Day – book by Mark Batterson

7 Habits to help you win the day:

  1. Flip the Script
  2. Kiss the Wave
  3. Eat the Frog
  4. Fly the Kite
  5. Cut the Rope
  6. Wind the Clock
  7. Seed the Clouds

3 parts to winning the day:

Part 1: Bury Dead Yesterdays

Flip the Script – rewrite my narrative –

1851 to 1983 – 132 consecutive years of loosing – how do you turn that tide? “Fletcher made a recording of the Australian team winning the race. The recording included narration and the sound of a sailboat cutting through the water. A copy of that recording was given to each member of the crew, and they were instructed to listen to it twice a day. They did this—get this—every day for three years! Before even setting sail, they had won the race 2,190 times.

How did the Australian team bury a long losing streak? They flipped the flipping script! They told themselves a different story over and over again. They won the race because they won the day—1,095 days in a row!”

What do you tell yourself every day? What story do write in your mind of what your day will be?

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Kiss the wave – process my pain – we all have it but what do I do with mine? I may not be responsible for my pain but I am “response-able”

“The answer is the second habit—kiss the wave. You may not be responsible for the difficulties you’ve had to endure, but you are response-able. At the end of the day, your explanations are more important than your experiences. Joseph Merrick is exhibit A. It’s incredibly counterintuitive, but the obstacles we encounter are not the enemy. The enemy, more often than not, is us. The obstacle? The obstacle—believe it or not—is the way.

“What have you come to teach me?

When we find ourselves in difficult situations, we get so focused on getting out of them that we fail to get anything out of them. Then we wonder why we find ourselves in the same situation all over again. There is nothing wrong with asking God to change your circumstances, but His primary objective is changing you. The circumstances you’re asking God to change may be the very circumstances He is using to change you.”

Charles Spurgeon Story

Mark 4:35-41

‘On that day, when evening had come, he told them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the sea.” So they left the crowd and took him along since he was in the boat. And other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. He was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion. So they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher! Don’t you care that we’re going to die?” He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Silence! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. Then he said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” And they were terrified and asked one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!” ‘

Part 2: Win the Day

Eat the Frog:

“Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do amazing things among you.” Joshua 3:5

“The bottom line? You can’t just pray like it depends on God. You also have to work like it depends on you. If you want God to do the super, you’ve got to do the natural. And you have to start first thing in the morning.”

“Either way, consistency is king. Consistency beats intensity seven days a week!”

“Few things test the limits of human endurance like Navy SEAL training. It includes ten-mile runs with fifty-pound backpacks and midnight swims in the freezing Pacific Ocean. The training develops tactical skills and survival skills that would make MacGyver proud. It’s meant to push the limits of physical, emotional, and mental endurance. But every day begins the same way—with an exacting inspection of one’s bed. In the words of Admiral McRaven,”

“If you did it right, the corners would be square, the covers pulled tight, the pillow centered just under the headboard, and the extra blanket folded neatly at the foot of the rack.

It was a simple task, mundane at best. But every morning we were required to make our bed to perfection. It seemed a little ridiculous at the time, particularly in light of the fact that we were aspiring to be real warriors, tough battle-hardened SEALs, but the wisdom of this simple act has been proven to me many times over.

If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day.”

What do I want to accomplish?

What can I do to control the accomplishment of that goal?

Habit 4: Fly the Kite:

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart,” said the apostle Paul, “as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Colossians 3:23

“As God said to the prophet Zechariah, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.”5 Plumb line, kite string—same difference!

Does God delight in our accomplishments? Like a proud parent. And not just the big accomplishments! According to this verse from Zechariah, it’s the little things that produce disproportionate celebration. The Israelites hadn’t even broken ground on the temple yet. All they’d done was measure, and God was already giving them a standing ovation! Our heavenly Father celebrates the little steps of faith, the small acts of kindness. In fact, you can’t give someone a drink of water without God taking notice! God is great not just because nothing is too big. God is great because nothing is too small.

Now let me flip that script.

I know people who say they’ll give more when they make more. I’m not buying what they’re selling. I know people who say they’ll serve more when they have more time. We’ve already debunked that myth. You don’t find time; you make time! And I know people who think they’ll be ready to step up when the big opportunity presents itself. Not if they aren’t taking advantage of little opportunities right here, right now!

How you do anything is how you’ll do everything.

We want to do amazing things for God, but that isn’t our job. Our job is to consecrate ourselves to God. Then God does amazing things for us. It starts with the fourth habit—fly the kite. It’s doing little things like they’re big things. Go ahead and dream big, but start small. The good news? If you do little things like they’re big things, God will do big things like they’re little things. That’s how kite strings turn into suspension bridges.

If you aren’t making little sacrifices right now, you aren’t ready.

If you aren’t taking little risks right now, you aren’t ready.”

“Most of us default to a cultural definition, which often amounts to keeping up with the Kardashians. “We buy things we don’t need,” said Dave Ramsey, “with money we don’t have in order to impress people we don’t like.”5 Instead of living our lives, we try to live up to everybody else’s expectations. That is quite the burden to bear. That kind of “success” is a recipe for failure. Get off that merry-go-round as fast as you can, no matter which horse you’re riding!

Success is multidimensional, so it’s okay to have multiple definitions. And those definitions may change during different seasons of life. In the grand scheme of things, success is stewardship, and stewardship is success. Simply put, success is doing the best you can with what you have where you are. Potential is God’s gift to us, and what we do with it is our gift to God. That’s the bottom line. Quit comparing yourself with everyone else. Are you becoming the best version of yourself possible? Are you making the most of the unique gifts God has given you? Are you working on your weak hand? Are you swimming laps?

When we define success, it’s helpful to think in terms of different categories. Financially, success is raising your standard of giving rather than your standard of living. Spiritually, success is glorifying God and enjoying Him forever. Relationally, success is when those who know you best respect you most. At the end of the day, I want to be famous in my home. I love pastoring and writing, but success is not measured by church size or sales numbers.

If you succeed at the wrong thing, you’ve failed.

If you fail at the right thing, you’ve succeeded.”

There it is again: how you do anything is how you’ll do everything. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said it this way:

If it falls your lot to sweep streets in life, sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures. Sweep streets like Beethoven composed music. Sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry. Sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will have to pause and say, “Here lived a great street sweeper, who swept his job well.”

Part 3: Imagine Unborn Tomorrows

2 Corinthians 10:5

Ephesians 2:10

“According to the Talmud, along with everything God spoke into existence during the six days of creation, God made certain provisions. He commanded the Red Sea to split apart for Israel; the sun and moon to stand still for Joshua; the ravens to feed Elijah; the fish to spit out Jonah; the fire not to burn Shadrach, Messach, and Abednego; and the lions not to harm Daniel.3

Four dimensions of space-time is all we’ve ever known, so it’s very hard for us to conceive of God in any other way. What do we do? We create God in our image and make Him four-dimensional. News flash: God does not exist within the space-time dimensions He created. So while we think forward, God is working backward. It’s a bit of a mind bender, but God always begins with the end in mind.”

What are your life goals – top 5?

Who are they centered on?

Habit 5: Cut The Rope

Elisha Otis story – world’s fair and elevators

“In John’s gospel, Jesus made seven declarations:

I am the bread of life.

I am the light of the world.

I am the door.

I am the vine.

I am the good shepherd.

I am the resurrection and the life.

I am the way, the truth, and the life.11

Jesus is the Way, but He’s more than that. Jesus is the Waymaker! Along with those seven declarations, John included seven signs performed by Jesus. Each one presents overwhelming evidence as to Jesus’s identity as the Adjacent Possible.

Jesus was surrounded by five thousand hangry people when a little boy gave Him his lunch. That’s great, but there’s no way you feed five thousand people with five loaves and two fish. No way!

Way!

If you put what you have in your hands into the hands of the Waymaker, 5 plus 2 doesn’t equal 7 anymore. 5 + 2 = 5,000 R12. You have more left over than you started with!

Jesus encountered a man born blind. If you’re born blind, that means there are no synaptic connections between the optic nerve and the visual cortex of your brain. There is no way this man will ever have his vision restored. No way!

Way!

The Waymaker did synaptogenesis, installing new synaptic pathways in this blind man’s brain!

Lazarus was four days dead. There was no way he would ever see the light of day again. No way!

Way!

The same voice that said “Let there be light” said “Lazarus, come forth.”

He is the God who makes sidewalks through the sea.

He is the God who makes iron ax-heads float.

He is the God who makes the sun stand still.

Habit 6: Wind The Clock

Time is measured in minutes, life is measured in moments

Chronos vs Kairos

“ I’m not sure who comes to mind for you, but I immediately think of Caleb. Biblically speaking, he’s the patron saint of neoteny. When he finally stepped foot in the Promised Land after forty years of wandering in the wilderness, he was not the same young man he was before, but Caleb felt forty all over again!

I am as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so is my strength now.”

Habit 7: Seed the Clouds

“That is precisely the way God works in our lives! He begins with the end in mind, providentially preparing good works in advance. Then God works backward. Seeding the clouds is exercising our faith by identifying God-honoring, God-sized goals, then reverse engineering them into daily habits.

Seeding clouds is dreaming big by thinking long, and it starts with praying hard. Praying without planning is a waste of time, while planning without praying is a waste of energy. It’s also called the sin of presumption. The good news? The more you pray, the bigger you dream. And the bigger you dream, the more you have to pray!

Let me double back to Elijah one more time. At first, there was no visible evidence of God answering his prayer for rain. That is when most of us give up, but Elijah doubled down.

“Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked.

“There is nothing there,” he said.

Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”

The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.”

How do I stay focused on what God wants in my life instead of what I want in my life – how do I keep from being distracted?

  1. Start your day with silence
  2. Take your thoughts captive
  3. Play the long game

We will only look at a few.

Week 1: Immanuel

Immanuel – “…She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God with us.’” Is. 7:14

Deity in humanity. To have God with us brings God into our chaos. We cannot go to God, so He came to us.

Tony Evans said, “In Jesus Christ, God took a selfie.” He gave us a glimpse of God in human form. We saw God in the person of Jesus, but He was still all human – he got tired, he got hungry, he had aches and pains.

Jesus was God and man’s emulsifier. He brought us together with God.

Immanuel: how does God becoming man impact your life?

King:

Revelation 17:14, Isaiah 6:5, 1 Timothy 6:13-15

King: a preeminent ruler – a ruler who cannot be surpassed

Why was this title confusing to those who didn’t acknowledge Jesus as God in the flesh?

What was He king over? Nature, evil, humanity,
If He is king, then does He rule in my life?

Lord:

Romans 10:13, 1 Corinthians 2:8, Revelation 17:14

Lord: a master or ruler over someone’s life

About 1/2 of the time “lord” is used in the new testament it is used as a term referring to the master of slaves or servants, not used as a term of deity.

If I struggle to believe in Him, then I’ll struggle to submit to Him. A secret agent Christian is someone who denies the lordship of Jesus in their life.

I prove Jesus’ lordship in my life by what I do with my feet not what I say.

[Mat 8:5-10 CSB]

5 When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, pleading with him,

6 “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible agony.”

7 He said to him, “Am I to come and heal him? ”

8 “Lord,” the centurion replied, “I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.

9 “For I too am a man under authority, having soldiers under my command. I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this! ‘ and he does it.”

10 Hearing this, Jesus was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with so great a faith.

[Jhn 4:7-11 CSB]

7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. “Give me a drink,” Jesus said to her,

8 because his disciples had gone into town to buy food.

9 “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman? ” she asked him. For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.

10 Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would ask him, and he would give you living water.”

11 “Sir,” said the woman, “you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do you get this ‘living water’?

Lamb:

John 1:29

What is the significance of the lamb in Israel’s history?

Passover –

Annual sacrifice of the lamb –

Why is it important for us to recognize Jesus as the Lamb?

Priest:

Explanation of what the high priest did for the day of atonement

  1. The high priest was to take off his normal priestly garments, wash, and then put on the special garments – white linen robe – to be like all the other people – which were prescribed for the sacrifices which took him into the holy of holies
  2. The high priest secured the necessary sacrificial animals: a bull for his own sin offering and two male goats for the people’s sin offering; two rams, one for Aaron’s and the other for the people’s burnt offering
  3. The high priest slaughtered the bull for his own sin offering
  4. Before entering into the Holy of Holies with the blood of the bull, The high priest had to create a “cloud” of incense in the Holy of Holies, covering the mercy seat, to “veil” the glory of God so that he could enter in. In the case of The high priest, he was to offer only the prescribed incense so as to create an obscuring veil of smoke, thus dimming the glory of God’s presence and sparing his life.
  5. The high priest then took some of the blood of the bull and sprinkled it on the mercy seat seven times
  6. Lots were then cast for the two goats, to determine which would be slaughtered and which would be driven away
  7. The goat for slaughter, the goat of the people’s sin offering, was sacrificed, and its blood was taken into the Holy of Holies and applied to the mercy seat, as the bull’s blood had been
  8. Cleansing was then made for the holy place, seemingly by the sprinkling of the blood of both the bull and the goat. The atonement of the holy place is done alone, without anyone present to help, or to watch
  9. Next, outside the tent, The high priest was to make atonement for the altar of burnt offering, using, it would seem, the blood of both the bull and the goat
  10. Now the second goat, the one which was kept alive, had the sins of the nation symbolically laid on its head, and was driven from the camp to a desolate place, from which it must never return
  11. The high priest then entered the tent of meeting, removed his linen garments, washed, and put on his normal priestly garments
  12. The burnt offerings of rams, one for The high priest and his family and the other for the people, was now offered
  13. The earlier sacrifices of the bull and the goat were completed. The fat of the sin offering was burned on the altar, and the remains of the bull and the goat were taken outside the camp, where they were burned
  14. Those who had been rendered unclean by handling the animals on which the sins of The high priest or the people were laid were to wash themselves and then return to camp

Hebrews 4:14-16

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let’s hold firmly to our confession.

15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things just as we are, yet without sin.

16 Therefore let’s approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for help at the time of our need.

R.C. Sproul defined sin this way:

“Sin is cosmic treason. Sin is treason against a perfectly pure Sovereign. It is an act of supreme ingratitude toward the One to whom we owe everything, to the One who has given us life itself. Have you ever considered the deeper implications of the slightest sin…? What are we saying to our Creator when we disobey Him at the slightest point? We are saying no to the righteousness of God. We are saying, “God, Your law is not good. My judgment is better than Yours. Your authority does not apply to me. I am above and beyond Your jurisdiction. I have the right to do what I want to do, not what You command me to do.”

Alistair Begg said, I want us to note three things that we learn by observing what took place on the Day of Atonement:

1. Sin is serious. Just as one could not enter into the Holy of Holies in a sinful state without dying, we face spiritual death as a result of our sin – forever separated from a holy God. Romans 6:23 tells us that “the wages for sin is death;” that is what our cosmic treason has earned, and that is what justice demands.

Sin is serious for the believer as well. Even though we are forgiven, we must not regard sin lightly.

If we do, it will rob us of our joy in Christ and destroy our spiritual growth. Instead, we must fight it and flee from it. As the Puritan John Owen stated, “Be killing sin or it will be killing you.”

2. Forgiveness is costly. God does not merely ignore sin. All sin is a serious transgression of God’s law, and God’s justice demands that it be accounted for. Enter the sacrificial system, which would one day yield to Christ’s ultimate sacrifice on the cross.

3. Shed blood was necessary. We read in Hebrews 9:22 that “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” Atonement for Israel’s sin required a blood sacrifice.

Savior:

Jesus means deliverer or rescuer

Matthew 1:21

Every single problem on earth originates with sin – my sin, someone else’s sin, or an environment contaminated by sin.

The job of a lifeguard is to save people who are drowning. If someone is drowning but they are trying to save themselves then the lifeguard is powerless to help. In order to be saved, I have to allow the lifeguard to do the work.

I can’t save myself from my sin, I have to let Jesus’ work on the cross be enough for me.

Messiah:

Galatians 2:20

It’s not me who lives but Christ – but the messiah himself – who lives in me – My life and His life are one. When Jesus becomes my identity, the He can function in the 3 roles He came to fulfill.

Jesus Christ – Christ is not His name – it is a title – a designation of His fulfillment of God’s promises for mankind

Jesus fulfilled as the Messiah, the roles of prophet (represent God before men), priest (represent men before God), and king (God promised that man would rule but Adam failed in that duty – Jesus came to fulfill that promise).

He is the anointed one – not just a savior – to bring the word of God, the presence of God, and the rule of God – In order for Him to bring these things He must be our identity

He must be my point of reference – just as the Messiah was supposed to be a Jew, we must have Him as our point of reference. He must be the centerpiece of my spiritual identity.

Word:

Jesus was proclaimed to be The Word

Preexistent – the author of creation – He had a divine nature

Coexistent – He has always been

Self-existent –

John 1:14 – The Word became flesh and dwelt among us – God moved into our neighborhood.

Jesus is a living being

He communicates on behalf of God the Father

Looking at Jesus gives us a picture of what God is like – a visible manifestation.

I Am:

Jesus expressed His deity in the term I Am.

He identified himself as the I Am – eternally present

John 11 – resurrection of Lazarus

Jesus identified himself as the resurrection and the life – He demonstrated His power by raising Lazarus from the dead. His I Am ness joined this family in their pain.

What has died in my life – hope, relationships, perspective, dreams –

The Bread of Life

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” -John 6:35

Light of the World

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” -John 8:12

The Door

“I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” -John 10:9

Good Shepherd

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” -John 10:11

The Resurrection and Life

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” -John 11:25, 26

The Way, the Truth and the Life

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” -John 14:6

The Vine

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” -John 15:5

Sermon on the mount _Matthew 5:13-48

Here are my notes on the last two sections we’ve covered – Salt and Light and the ending section dealing with the 6 specific sins. Let me know if you have any questions or can’t follow my thoughts through the notes.

Salt and light

Matthew 5:13-20

13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by people.14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.17 “Do not presume that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke of a letter shall pass from the Law, until all is accomplished! 19 Therefore, whoever nullifies one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.20 “For I say to you that unless your righteousness far surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Salt:

What does salt do?

  • Improves the taste – adds something that nothing else can
  • Used as a preservative
  • Used as a cooking method – it can incase something and keeps it moist while being cooked

What is the connection between salt and Christians in the world?

How do we stay salty?

Light:

What is the purpose of light?

How does it impact the environment it is in?

What is your favorite form of light?

What if it was gone?

Law and what the prophets said:

Jesus didn’t come to take the law away. He came to be the fulfillment of justification in the law.

Matthew 5:21-48

Jesus discusses 6 different sins that He wants us to see in different ways than they’ve been presented before.

#1: Murder – Verses 21-26 – Exodus 20:13

21 “You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not murder,’ and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be answerable to the court.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be answerable to the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be answerable to the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. 23 Therefore, if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there you remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering. 25 Come to good terms with your accuser quickly, while you are with him on the way to court, so that your accuser will not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you will not be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last quadrans (about 1/64 of a daily wage).

#2: Adultery – Verses 27-30 – Exodus 20:14

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; 28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 Now if your right eye is causing you to sin, tear it out and throw it away from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand is causing you to sin, cut it off and throw it away from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.

#3: Divorce – Verses 31-32 – Deut. 24:1-4

#4: Be a person of your word – Verses 33-37

Lev 19:12, Deut 23:21, Ps 56:12

#5: Retaliation – Verses 38-42

Exodus 21:24, Lev 24:19-20, Deut 19:19-21

#6: Love your enemies – Verses 43-48 – Lev 19:18

Thursday Night Bible Study Series: The Sermon on the Mount – Part 1 – The Beatitudes

Here are the notes from the first part of our series on the Sermon On The Mount.

We will cover the last 2 Beatitudes this week. I love you all. Can’t wait to see you Thursday!

Matthew 5:1-12

1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,

2 and he began to teach them. He said:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

  • Blessed are the poor in spirit:
What does it mean to be poor in spirit?
To feel a deep sense of spiritual destitution and desperateness – to comprehend their nothingness before God
If someone understands their true state before God, then they also truly understand the joy found in their new state after salvation.
They seek God and His kingdom before (and in place of) their own desires and the world’s kingdom.

God requires emptiness in us, before He can fill us.
Poor in spirit – poverty – bankrupt – impossible to take care of obligations on our own – I can’t pay my own way.
One of the reasons generosity is so important to a Christian – We have been given more than we could ever imagine.

    Luke 18:9-14
9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and looked down on everyone else:
10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.
11 The Pharisee was standing and praying like this about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I’m not like other people — greedy, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
    12 I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of everything I get.’
13 “But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes to heaven but kept striking his chest and saying, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner! ’
14 I tell you, this one went down to his house justified rather than the other, because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
  • Blessed are those that mourn:
What does it mean to mourn?
What are some things we mourn over?

Does what saddens God, sadden me?
If God mourns over something and I treat it casually, what does that show about my current spiritual state?
Does God promise to console all mourning? No – He promises to comfort those who mourn about the things He mourns over.
We want to have the same emotions God has – not be led by our own emotions.
  • Blessed are the humble/meek:
    Meek does not mean weak
Breaking a horse – you do not break a horse to remove it’s strength and speed – you want to remove its self will. You want it to surrender its own will to yours.
God doesn’t want us to be lethargic, lazy people who do nothing – He wants us to use our passions and energy to serve His will.

Serving Him and His will is how you inherit what God has for them.
  • Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness:
If I have the right appetite then I can be filled.
    What are my appetites now?
How do I fulfill my current appetites?

A lot of Christians are fed on a diet of donuts – things that taste really good in the moment but have no nutritional value. Getting worked up in a moment of emotion is fine, but you can’t live on it forever. Depth is a requirement of spiritual growth and a Christian life that is sustainable.
  • Blessed are the merciful:
I don’t show mercy so I can receive mercy, but I know I need mercy, so I show others mercy as well.
I know there are times in my life when I must have God’s mercy and the mercy of others. I don’t like to extend mercy in many cases, but when I realize how it feels when I have no other option except mercy, then it is easier for me to show it to others in those same moments. Mercy removes the misery I ought to receive when I’m guilty.
Mercy also speaks to us having compassion on someone who is suffering. We naturally think of suffering as a physical trait of an illness or injury, but it also can be spiritual and emotional.
  • Blessed are the pure in heart:
Purity of heart begins with authenticity before God. He knows me – so I don’t have to tell Him everything or be completely honest with Him. A failure to be honest with God is the beginning of a relationship destruction. In any relationship, dishonesty is the beginning of the end. Mistakes can be made, wrongs done, and trusts broken, but if honesty rules, then restoration has a chance. If someone is hiding something, then reconciliation is much more difficult.
  • Blessed are the peacemakers:
A peacemaker pursues reconciliation with others instead of looking to be right.
God could have looked at humanity in our sin and said “well, sucks for them” and just started over. Instead He wanted to reconcile us to himself, and the only way to do that was the death of His own son.
God was willing – and did – to give His own Son in order to reconcile me to Him, but I won’t budge an inch in order to reconcile with others because I want to be right more than I want peace.
Being a peacemaker allows God to use me in the lives and conflicts of others by identifying the truth, addressing the sin, and constructing a bridge between the people.
  • Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness:
The people in scripture who chose persecution over popularity are set apart. Hebrews 11 lists them for us – Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Caleb, Gideon, Samson, Samuel, and David
So when people lie about me, speak evil against me, or insult me, then I am blessed – I’m in good company. Paul said in Romans 8:18 “The sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is going to be revealed to us”

Questions About Prayer

  1. What is prayer?
  2. Why do we pray?
  3. What happens if we don’t pray?
  4. Why do we struggle with praying?

What does God want from us when we pray?

Matthew 6:9-13 “Pray, then, in this way:‘Our Father who is in heaven,Hallowed be Your name. ‘Your kingdom come.Your will be done,On earth as it is in heaven. ‘Give us this day our daily bread. ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’

  • Hallowed be your name – acknowledging all glory belongs to God – we need to tell Him we agree
  • Your kingdom come – God’s kingdom is not set up on this earth – yet – but it will be
  • Your will be done – God has a perfect will for my life – I’m surrendering control to Him
  • On earth as it is in heaven – I want Him to have the same freedom in my life as He has in heaven
  • Give us this day our daily bread – asking God to provide my needs – daily – not looking ahead – focusing on the present
  • Forgive us our debts – a debt is something I owe to someone – we are asking God to wipe away my sin – I owe a payment for my sin, but God paid it
  • As we have forgiven our debtors – forgive me like I, forgive those who have wronged me
  • And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil – as I follow You, please lead me away from things that would cause me to stumble and deliver me when I lead myself into trouble
  • For Yours is the kingdom – Your kingdom is the only one that matters and I want you to rule my kingdom
  • The power – your power is the greatest and I yield to it
  • And the glory – my life bringing you glory is all that matters
  • Forever – in this life and for eternity

The structure of the prayer is simple

  • Focus on God and who He is first
  • Acknowledge His control and will in my life
  • Ask Him to meet my needs and the needs of those around me
  • Ask for forgiveness and direction
  • Reiterate He is all that matters

Our prayers do not have to follow this exact pattern, but we must realize our regular prayer life will ultimately model these things.

Do my offerings to God reflect His blessings to me?
  • Personal spiritual lives
Time spent with God every day
Does my time with Him alter my worldview?

Types of Fasts in Scripture – this is not an exhaustive list – just a few things for us to consider from scripture.

  1. To prepare for ministry. Jesus spent forty days and nights in the wilderness fasting and praying before He began God’s work on this earth. He needed time alone to prepare for what His Father had called Him to do (Matthew 4:1-17; Mark 1:12-13; Luke 4:1-14).
  2. To seek God’s wisdom. Paul and Barnabas prayed and fasted for the elders of the churches before committing them to the Lord for His service (Acts 14:23).
  3. To show grief. Nehemiah mourned, fasted, and prayed when he learned Jerusalem’s walls had been broken down, leaving the Israelites vulnerable and disgraced (Nehemiah 1:1-4).
  4. To seek deliverance or protection. Ezra declared a corporate fast and prayed for a safe journey for the Israelites as they made the nine-hundred- mile trek to Jerusalem from Babylon (Ezra 8:21-23).
  5. To repent. After Jonah pronounced judgment against the city of Nineveh, the king covered himself with sackcloth and sat in the dust. He then ordered the people to fast and pray. Jonah 3:10 says, “When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, He relented and did not bring on them the destruction He had threatened.”
  6. To gain victory. After losing forty thousand men in battle in two days, the Israelites cried out to God for help. Judges 20:26 says all the people went up to Bethel and “sat weeping before the Lord.” They also “fasted that day until evening.” The next day the Lord gave them victory over the Benjamites.
  7. To worship God. Luke 2 tells the story of an eighty-four-year-old prophetess named Anna. Verse 37 says, “She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.” Anna was devoted to God, and fasting was one expression of her love for Him.
  • Fasting was an expected discipline in both the Old and New Testament eras.
  • Fasting and prayer can restore the loss of the “first love” for your Lord and result in a more intimate relationship with Christ.
  • Fasting is a biblical way to truly humble yourself in the sight of God.
  • Fasting enables the Holy Spirit to reveal your true spiritual condition, resulting in brokenness, repentance, and a transformed life.
  • Fasting will encourage the Holy Spirit to quicken the Word of God in your heart and His truth will become more meaningful to you.
  • Fasting can transform your prayer life into a richer and more personal experience.
  • Fasting can result in a dynamic personal revival in your own life and make you a channel of revival to others.

What should I fast?

  • Food
Food is the most common thing to fast
    • What types of food fasts are there?
      • Total – nothing to eat or drink at all
      • Food – but still drink water and juices
      • Daniel fast – eat fruit and vegetables only, drink water and juice
      • One meal – choose not to eat a particular meal each day – use that time to pray (breakfast or supper are most common)
      • A particular kind of food – bread, sugar, soda, sweet tea, etc… don’t fast something you wouldn’t want anyway (kale)
      • Eating out – you’re only going to eat at home
  • An activity
    • Social media – for the period of the fast, do not get on social media at all. If you would like, you can post a final message saying you are taking a break from social media for the purpose of spending more time with God each day. You do not have to explain it all if you don’t want to
    • Video games – choose not to play any video games for the time period
    • Online shopping for pleasure – no browsing Amazon, walmart.com, Pinterest, Etsy, Ebay, etc.
    • Netflix, Prime, Disney +, or sports on TV

My suggestions for our Young Adults group:

  • Social media – this is a great place to start for our group. Most people in your life will ask you at some point over the 40 days why you aren’t on social media anymore. That’s a great opportunity to tell them why you’re doing the fast.
  • A meal each day – it amounts to an extended period of intermittent fasting. Many of you have tried that to loose weight or get in better shape in addition to working out. This would be different, because you want to pray during the time you would normally eat.
  • A particular type of food or drink – give up your favorite thing (bread, cake, sweet tea, etc)
  • Other activities – video games, tv service, online shopping, etc
  • If you have fasted before, you might consider something more substantial that just one meal each day

What are the specific goals of our fast?

  • God’s direction and vision for our church as a whole – we want to be unified
  • God’s favor in our community – continued opportunities and new opportunities
  • God’s wisdom for our staff (Pastor Brady)
  • God’s provision – continued and increased giving by our people
  • God to eliminate the pandemic
  • God to heal our country – racially, politically, socio economically, morally, etc
  • God to strengthen our families – starts with the husbands and fathers (or single moms), flows to everyone else. As a single Young Adult, you are responsible for your own spiritual growth and walk
  • God to teach all of us individually how much we need to follow Him and His plan for our lives – spending time with Him every day

I hope you will consider joining us for this crucial 40 days.

Overcoming Fear Series July/August 2020

Overcoming Fear

Everyone has fears in their life. We all struggle with certain moments and situations.

We have a hard time believing God and what He says, when the world around us looks like it’s falling apart.

We are going to look at 4 passages of scripture that deal with fear in some way.

Night 1: July 23rd

Your Foundation

  • Matthew 7:24-27
  • Luke 6:46-49
  • What was true about both houses?
  • What did the two builders in the story have to fear?
  • How did they deal with (do something about) their fear?
  • What storm do you fear the most?
  • Why do you fear that particular storm?
  • How does your fear impact the outcome of your life? (decisions you make, etc)
  • What do these passages teach us about handling fear?

Your Fight (2 parts)

  • I Kings 18:21, 19:1-8, 9-14
Elijah was at his wits end. He saw himself as the last one in Israel who wanted to serve God.
His fear was not based in a disbelief that God COULD step in and save him, but in the unknown.
  • What is the root of fear?
  • Why do we fear the unknown (what we don’t understand)?
  • What is your response when you fear something?
  • How does fear cripple us?

Your Finish

  • The end of this path with fear is a choice:
I will live with fear as a close, life-long partner
Or, I will eliminate fear from my life
    • How?
      • Fear is a reaction to something we perceive as dangerous, painful or threatening
      • Isaiah 41:10
10Do not fear [anything], for I am with you; Do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, be assured I will help you; I will certainly take hold of you with My righteous right hand [a hand of justice, of power, of victory, of salvation].’
      • Philippians 4:6-7
6 Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God.
7 And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].
      • Romans 8:15
15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading again to fear [of God’s judgment], but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons [the Spirit producing sonship] by which we [joyfully] cry, “Abba! Father!”
      • 1 John 4:18-19
18 There is no fear in love [dread does not exist]. But perfect (complete, full-grown) love drives out fear, because fear involves [the expectation of divine] punishment, so the one who is afraid [of God’s judgment] is not perfected in love [has not grown into a sufficient understanding of God’s love].
19 We love, because He first loved us.
      • Psalm 27:1-3
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation – Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the refuge and fortress of my life – Whom shall I dread?
2 When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, My adversaries and my enemies, they stumbled and fell.
3 Though an army encamp against me, My heart will not fear; Though war arise against me, Even in this I am confident.
      • Joshua 1:1-9
1 After the death of Moses the Lord’s servant, the Lord spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant. He said,
2 “Moses my servant is dead. Therefore, the time has come for you to lead these people, the Israelites, across the Jordan River into the land I am giving them.
3 I promise you what I promised Moses: ‘Wherever you set foot, you will be on land I have given you—
4 from the Negev wilderness in the south to the Lebanon mountains in the north, from the Euphrates River in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west, including all the land of the Hittites.’
5 No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. For I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail you or abandon you.
6 “Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them.
7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do.
8 Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.
9 This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Reaching College Students and Young Adults in Your Community

Every community is different – if we want to reach someone in our community, then we have to know who that person is, what they’re doing, and how we can connect with them.

Our story of Young Adult Ministry – on the video

Our Ministry Model:

  • Philippians 3:12-14
Not that I have already reached the goal or am perfect, but I make every effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus.
Brothers and Sisters, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead,
I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus.
  • Reach the Young Adults already in our church
    • Recent High School graduates in our church
    • Any current college students in our church
    • Any single adults up to age 28 or so
  • Reach their friends and family
    • Coworkers
    • Classmates
    • Buddies from the gym or Starbucks (insert your favorite hobby here)
    • Family members who fit the class specs

How to minister to Young Adults:

  • Tell them the truth – according to scripture
    • Talk about things relevant to them, but don’t spend all your time telling them what they’re doing wrong – let the Holy Spirit do that – He’s much better at it than we are.
    • Don’t avoid tough subjects – if scripture talks about it, then we will talk about it
  • Spend time with them – having fun opens the door for really important conversations
    • Find things they like to do – and do them – sports, movies, hanging out, eating
  • Spend money on them – include young adult ministry in your budget. (we provide supper for them every Thursday night – some nights are really simple and cheap, others are more involved)
  • Spend time preparing, planning and contacting
  • Invite them into your life – they need to see healthy, happy, real couples and families – so show them
