The guys from our Thursday Night Bible Study met for the first time to begin discussing a Kyle Idleman book, gods at war. The goal of this study is to help us recognize all the specific struggles we deal with each day are really symptoms of a much larger issue – idolatry. We may be dealing with addictions, overeating, pornography, working too much, being consumed with possessions, or a host of other things. However, working on those things won’t make everything better. We may improve for a while, but the real issue is we want something more than we want God.
Most of us don’t want to think about our struggles as idols. We know everyone has issues, so it makes us feel much better about ourselves, but when we consider that we constantly put idols above the one true God, we aren’t as ready to talk about it. Kyle talks about a series of questions for us help determine if we have idols in our lives.
- What disappoints you?
- What do you complain about the most?
- Where do you make financial sacrifices?
- What worries you?
- Where do you feel safe and secure?
- What makes you mad?
- What are your dreams and passions?
The answers to these questions will point you to potential idols in your life. I’m very excited about our discussions to come.
